AFF Survey

Does the Army Families' 'Offer' meet the needs of the modern Army family?

The Army Families Federation (AFF) is appealing to all Army families to take their latest survey and say whether they feel the package offered to them eases the impact that Service life can have.

How much do families know?

The charity is exploring various elements of the current package, or 'Offer' available to families, and how they translate to Army family life. This includes how aware families are of policies such as subsidised military housing, educational allowances, and healthcare policies such as support with assisted conception.

It also seeks to discover what more families feel needs to be done to improve life as a modern Army family.

Families' feedback vital

AFF Chief Executive Sara Baade explains: "Families' views have always been integral to our work and what we hope to achieve year on year. We want as many families as possible to get involved with our latest survey, whether married or unmarried, whether or not you live in military housing. Different elements of your soldier's 'offer' will affect you to varying degrees, but AFF is here for you all, so share your experience with us and help provide us with evidence we can present to decision makers to push for improvements where needed."

Pushing for positive change

Known as the voice of the Army community, AFF is keen for families to be open and candid in their views and opinions when providing feedback. They have a strong track record of using families' evidence to push for change, and believe the more families that take part in their surveys, the more influence they will have when approaching MOD, government and other policy makers.

Take AFF's survey

SERVICE PUPIL PREMIUM 2018 - England

This message is for the attention of Regular Forces Service parents based in England.

If your child attends a state school, Academy or Free school in England and has been registered with the school as a Service pupil, the school will be granted a Service Pupil Premium of £300.

The Service Pupil Premium (SPP) is provided by the Department for Education (DfE) to enable schools to offer additional, mainly pastoral support during challenging times; this could include anything from a Service parent being away, being injured on active service, to bereavement. Funds are paid directly to schools with Head Teachers and school Governors deciding how the funds are used.

Schools with Service children in Reception to Year 11 classes are eligible to receive SPP, but only if your child’s name appears on the school roll as being a Service child. The annual census takes place on 18 January 2018 and children must be registered with the school before this date.

You are encouraged to contact the school and make them aware your child is from a Service family. This information is not shared with other organisations and is protected on the National Pupil database. For more information on eligibility, please see the links below:

Thank you form PC Bob

The Ladies of MoD St Athan

I would just like to thank you all for your very kind and thoughtful gifts. They are very much appreciated not only by me but also my wife, Karen. We’ve already enjoyed some fresh coffee and the tea pot has found pride of place in the kitchen window. We are now very much looking forward to the high tea at Llanerch Vineyard.

I would just like to say that during my time at St Athan, it has been both an honour and privilege to serve and protect you and your families. I would also like to thank you for all your help and support, which made my job a lot easier. I’ll miss meeting and talking not only to you but also your children, which it has been my pleasure to watch them grow and mature over the years.

I would just like to wish you and your families all the very best for the future and hope you have a great Christmas and a happy New Year.

AFF - Further / Higher Education Survey

Service families encouraged to share attitudes towards higher education

Recent academic research by the University of Winchester has indicated that four out of ten service children who have the ability to progress into higher education are unlikely to do so.

Leading military charity, the Army Families Federation (AFF) is working with the university to find out more from Service families on this issue.

Take AFF's survey
Families with a child aged 11-18 years are encouraged to take part in AFF's latest survey, which seeks to find out what type of school their child currently attends, and what plans the family has for their child's education following school.

AFF Policy & Research Director Louise Simpson said: "We need families to help us to build a better understanding of why further and higher education may not appeal. If families aspire for their child to attend further/higher education, tell us why, and similarly, if not, we'd love to know their reasons."

Parental influence
AFF is also keen to hear about the influence parents have had on their child's education, including their link to the Services, and their own educational choices too.

Share your views
To take AFF's short survey and share your views and experiences, go to https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/3GXGL99.

Survey closes 13 November.

Free bike rides on offer to women living across the Vale of Glamorgan

The Vale of Glamorgan Council is supporting a campaign that offers women free bike rides in an effort to reduce the inequality between the number of male and female cyclists.

Through the Council, the HSBC UK Breeze programme delivers fun, free, local rides for women on a weekly basis.

The number of female cyclists has increased in the last few years, and thanks to two enthusiastic ‘Breeze Champions’ Sara Novo and Hilary May, the rides were introduced into the Vale last year.

“I was new to Wales and I wanted to work as a volunteer. I found out about the HSBC UK Breeze project through the Wales Volunteering website, and thought it would be a great way to meet
new people, and improve my English
The rides vary in speed and terrain and Breeze Champions will ensure no one is left behind.

Both champions are also looking to set up regular coaching sessions for women in the Vale.

For more information on cycling activities in the Vale of Glamorgan you can email Rachel Shepherd or to find a HSBC UK Breeze ride in your local region, visit www.letsride.co.uk/breeze

Families Federations seek vital transition feedback from military families

The Naval, Army and RAF Families Federations have today launched their joint Transition Survey.

The federations are inviting military families to take part in sharing their views and experiences to help make a difference to Forces families.

Focus on Transition
The survey focusses on transition out of the Armed Forces and will target those families who have either left the Forces in the last two years, or are due to leave before September 2019.

It will cover all aspects of the transition process including reasons for leaving, and the effect this has on the family of the serving person. They’ll also be asking families to tell them what they find to be the most challenging aspect of transition.

As well as asking for families’ experiences, we’ll be asking them to share their ideas about how the transition process can be improved. Their opinions are vital in informing our future work and success.”

Get involved

For those who are leaving: click here to take the survey.

For those that have left: click here to take the survey.

All those who take part will be entered into a free prize draw to win one of three HP tablets courtesy of DXC technology.

Don’t miss your chance to help improve transition for Forces families now and in the future. Families’ feedback will also be used to shape the coming work of the Transition Liaison for each of the families federations, who are each kindly funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT).
